Music came to life across New Zealand as 86 students from Years 5 to 12 at Redeemer Lutheran College, Brisbane, embarked on an unforgettable Music Tour through the North Island with Student Horizons. Featuring four ensembles; Chamber Strings, Wind Orchestra, Stage Band, and Senior Singers, the tour was designed to go beyond performance, creating opportunities for connection, growth, and shared musical experiences on a global stage.
At Student Horizons, we believe the most powerful learning happens through experience, and from the moment the group arrived, they were immersed in a journey that combined performance, collaboration, and cultural discovery.
Bringing Music to Life Through Performance
Throughout Auckland, Rotorua, and Wellington, students showcased their talents in a range of unique settings. Performances at Rainbow’s End, the magical Redwoods Forest, and the Bob Scott Retirement Village highlighted the versatility of the ensembles, as they adapted to different audiences and environments while bringing energy and joy to every stage.
Each performance was more than just a showcase, it was an opportunity to connect, inspire, and demonstrate the power of music to bring people together.
Building Connections Through Music
A defining feature of the tour was the series of school exchanges and workshops with local New Zealand students. At Long Bay College, Rotorua Girls’ High School, and Evans Bay Intermediate School, students collaborated, shared ideas, and learned from one another through music.
One of the most meaningful moments came at Evans Bay Intermediate, where Redeemer students connected with Kimi Ora Specialist School students alongside Years 7 and 8 peers. Through instrument demonstrations, shared performances, and genuine interaction, students embodied Redeemer’s motto: music is for everyone. A standout highlight was the performance of “Golden” from K-pop Demon Hunters, during which both students and staff were up dancing, bringing energy and excitement, and creating a moment that resonated with everyone involved.
Where Learning Meets Inspiration
Students further developed their musical skills through exceptional workshops with Auckland Symphonia and Orchestra Wellington. Working alongside professional musicians provided invaluable insight into performance, technique, and the discipline required at the highest levels of music.
These experiences challenged students to refine their craft while inspiring them to pursue their musical journeys with confidence and ambition. As David, Head of Music, shared, “Student Horizons delivered an exceptional experience from start to finish. Their organisation was seamless and transparent, communication was clear and timely, and every detail of the tour was handled with genuine thoughtfulness.”
Exploring Culture and Creativity
Beyond music, the tour offered rich cultural and sightseeing experiences. Students visited the Sky Tower in Auckland, explored the world of Hobbiton, and experienced the thrill of the luge in Rotorua.
The Mitai Māori Village provided a powerful cultural experience, deepening students’ understanding of New Zealand’s heritage.
In Wellington, highlights included the iconic cable car and a behind-the-scenes look at creativity in action at Weta Workshop, showcasing how storytelling and innovation intersect.
Building Confidence Beyond the Stage
Touring across multiple cities encouraged students to step outside their comfort zones, build independence, and strengthen friendships. Whether performing in new environments or engaging with unfamiliar audiences, students grew in confidence and resilience.
